Volvo Expands Global Electric Lineup with Sixth EV Model, the ES90

Volvo Cars has taken another decisive step in its electric journey with the unveiling of the all-new ES90. This fully electric vehicle joins the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40, and EX30 as the sixth electric model in Volvo's expanding portfolio, strengthening the Swedish manufacturer's position in the premium electric segment.

The ES90 arrives as a vehicle that creates its own category, skillfully merging attributes from sedans, fastbacks, and SUVs. This approach delivers a versatile car without compromising comfort or space, addressing the needs of drivers seeking both practicality and refined elegance in an electric package.

Electric Portfolio Reaches New Milestone

The addition of the ES90 marks a key development in Volvo's electrification strategy. With six distinct electric models now available, Volvo offers one of the most diverse electric lineups among premium manufacturers. This variety allows customers to select an electric Volvo that precisely matches their lifestyle needs, from the compact EX30 to the spacious EM90 minivan, and now the versatile ES90.

"The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life," says Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars. This statement highlights how the ES90 aligns with Volvo's mission to provide vehicles that enhance their owners' daily experiences while advancing technological capabilities.

First Volvo with 800V Architecture

The ES90 introduces Volvo's first 800-volt electrical system, enabling faster charging than any previous electric Volvo. This technology allows the vehicle to add 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes when connected to compatible 350 kW fast charging stations. With a total driving range of up to 700 kilometres under WLTP testing conditions, the ES90 addresses one of the primary concerns for potential electric vehicle adopters.

The improved charging speed and extended range make the ES90 suitable for long-distance travel without the lengthy charging stops associated with earlier electric vehicles. This advancement removes a significant barrier to electric vehicle adoption for many consumers who require their vehicles to handle occasional long journeys without inconvenience.

Built for Software Evolution

Like the EX90 SUV, the ES90 is built on Volvo's SPA2 architecture and Superset technology stack—a single set of hardware and software modules that will underpin all upcoming Volvo electric cars. This standardized approach enables Volvo to deploy improvements quickly across multiple models through over-the-air updates.

"The Superset is enabled by core computing, and the ES90 is the first Volvo car to be powered by a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration. That makes it the most powerful car we have ever created in terms of core computing capacity," explains Anders Bell, Volvo's chief engineering and technology officer. This computing power allows Volvo to "further raise the bar on safety and overall performance through data, software and AI."

Design Breaks Segment Boundaries

The ES90's exterior presents a confident stance with a slightly raised ride height that provides drivers with a more commanding view of the road. The flowing roofline balances elegance with practicality, contributing to the vehicle's excellent aerodynamics and resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.25—the lowest of any Volvo ever built.

Distinctive lighting elements include Volvo's signature Thor's Hammer headlights and unique C-shaped LED rear lamps complemented by LED lamps in the rear window. These create a recognizable light signature during welcome and farewell sequences. Customers can select from seven exterior colours and wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches.

Premium Interior Experience

Inside, the ES90 emphasizes Scandinavian design principles with premium comfort, authentic materials, and purpose-driven layout. The 3.1-metre wheelbase provides generous legroom for second-row passengers, making the vehicle comfortable for adults and children alike. Six interior ambient light themes and various upholstery options allow for personalization.

Technology enhances the cabin experience through a panoramic roof with optional adjustable transparency, a four-zone climate system with advanced air purification, and exceptional sound insulation that creates one of Volvo's quietest interiors ever. The premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system option features 25 high-fidelity speakers with Dolby Atmos spatial audio capability.

Advanced Safety Systems Standard

True to Volvo's heritage, the ES90 incorporates comprehensive safety technology. The vehicle features a sensor array including five radars, seven cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar system from Luminar Technologies. This equipment provides vision beyond human range to detect and avoid potential hazards.

Inside, a driver understanding system monitors attention levels and can intervene if focus shifts from the road. The ES90 also includes full-cabin occupant sensing capable of detecting movements as subtle as a baby's breathing, helping prevent occupants from being left behind unintentionally.

The ES90 demonstrates Volvo's progress toward its electric future while maintaining the brand's core values of safety, quality, and environmental responsibility. Interested in discovering more about Volvo Canada’s all-electric lineup? Visit us today at Volvo Cars Villa!
