A look at the impressive Volvo B4, B5, and B6 mild-hybrid engines
July 27 2022,
The Volvo engine lineup is getting a significant makeover in 2023, with the introduction of B4, B5, and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains across the board. The B5 and B6 engines already started to roll out 2022, notably on the new Volvo XC 60, and now they are going to be offered across the lineup. They will be replacing current T4, T5, and T6 engines.
What are the benefits of Volvo B4, B5, and B6 engines?
The Volvo lineup of B engine are mild-hybrid powertrains. That means that they are more efficient, smoother, and more refined. They integrate a 48-volt system and 13-hp ISG as well as new braking technology to allow for energy recuperation when slowing down.
This ISG is used to start the engine while the system can also provide supplemental power when accelerating. The end result is significantly better fuel economy, a smoother overall ride, and improved performance.
Volvo B4, B5, and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains average about 1 L per 100 km less than their T4, T5, and T6 equivalents. Moreover, they are also a lot smoother, providing crisper accelerations and more linear overall performance. Volvo B engines also get revamped braking. As for the performance, it is similar on paper, but the engines are actually quicker thanks to the 48-volt mild-hybrid system that provides a supplemental boost of performance.
