5 technologies that improve efficiency in Volvo vehicles

Volvo vehicles are known for their impressive luxury, safety, and comfort. That said, Volvo vehicles are also leading the way when it comes to improving efficiency in premium vehicles. We see this with the Volvo Recharge lineup of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles which is one of the largest in the industry, but Volvo also is a leader when it comes to developing technologies that improve efficiency in everyday driving. Here are five technologies that are simple in theory but that will help you get the most out of every single drop of fuel.

Eco Drive Mode

he goal of the Eco Drive mode which is selectable when you are out on the road is to improve fuel efficiency. This driving mode adjusts various parameters and components to optimize efficiency. For example, Eco Mode will adjust the automatic transmission’s shifting points and engine output as well as accelerator pedal response.  In doing so, your Volvo vehicle becomes easier to drive in a fuel-efficient manner.

Coast Function

The Coast Function available in Volvo models like the Volvo XC90 deactivate engine braking in order to allow kinetic energy to power the vehicle. When appropriate, the coast function allows the transmission to automatically disengage from the engine which helps preserve fuel economy. This is a particularly useful function in situations where the vehicle can roll under its own power like when going down a hill or when approaching a stop sign with enough room to coast to a stop.

Eco Cruise

Cruise control is optimized when activated using Eco Drive mode. The system will be a more linear when slowing down or accelerating, and all of the other functions of the vehicle will be set to improve efficiency first.

Eco Climate

Eco climate is part of the Eco Drive mode and like all of the other modes above, it is designed with fuel economy in mind. Certain climate functions won't be available or they will be modified when eco mode is selected in order to reduce fuel consumption.

Start/Stop

The start stop function is independent of the Eco Drive mode and can shut off the engine when the vehicle is stopped in order to preserve fuel and avoid the increased consumption that comes with idling.
