Volvo goes big with features in the XC40, a luxury subcompact that offers a new alternative. It doesn't offer the typical underpowered engines that are common in many subcompacts. Instead, you get options that are available in its larger siblings. If that is not impressive enough, the all-electric XC40 Recharge is changing the way drivers look at EV power and range. Mix all this in with great style and luxurious comfort and conveniences, and the XC40 is tough to overtake.
Let's further illustrate the XC40 by comparing it to a segment competitor, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA.
The 2021 Volvo XC40 outduels the GLA in powertrains
First, the XC40 impresses with a full range of powertrains that include a diversity that the GLA series doesn't have.
The XC40 begins with the T4 engine that has an output of 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Available in the Momentum trim, this combination has the lowest MSRP (under $40,000) of any other XC40 or GLA. XC40 buyers can also access the 248-horsepower T5 engine. It features exceptional torque, providing more aggressive capability when needed.
With the most advanced of all powertrains in this comparison, the XC40 Recharge EV features 402 horsepower, 486 lb-ft of torque, and a 335 km range. The GLA has nothing to match it.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 offers a turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder that outputs 221 horsepower. T5- and Recharge-equipped XC40 models feature more horsepower. Although the AMG GLA 35 and AMG GLA 45 have more power than the T4 and T5, neither compete with the XC40 Recharge.
It's a different world inside the 2021 Volvo XC40
Subcompact vehicles are judged largely by their interior dimensions. In the front row, the XC40 outsizes the GLA with 1,031 mm of headroom and 1,440 mm of shoulder room. This comfort expands with more rear head room, shoulder room and leg room than the GLA, too.
The XC40 also thinks big about versatility. You can store nearly 1,350 litres of cargo with the rear seats folded. It has more storage volume behind the rear seats than with up to 586 litres compared to the GLA's 436 litres.
